Honda Shelves $15B Canadian EV Plant, Heading to US — Fresh Failure for Liberal Green Gamble

ONTARIO – Honda is indefinitely shelving its $15 billion EV plant and battery factory in Alliston, Ontario, citing weak EV demand, hybrid strength, and U.S. policy shifts. Announced in 2024 with up to $5B in taxpayer subsidies, the project (240,000 vehicles/year) was already delayed in 2025. Now it’s on ice — with full cancellation possible — while Honda pivots to flexible hybrid/EV lines in Ohio.

This marks another high-profile retreat from Ottawa’s subsidy-heavy EV push, highlighting eroding foreign investment under prolonged Liberal rule: chronic red tape, high costs, policy uncertainty, and capital flight have left Canada struggling to convert announcements into shovels.
