Diplomat’s Privileged Son Gets 6-Year ‘Racism Discount’ for Kidnapping 14-Year-Old Boy

ONTARIO – Ontario Superior Court Justice Sandra Nishikawa sentenced Samir Abdelgadir, 45, to 11.5 years for his role in the 2020 kidnapping of a 14-year-old Toronto boy (snatched off the street on his way to school, blindfolded, held for 36 hours in a Brampton house amid a province-wide Amber Alert). The crime was retaliation for the boy’s half-brother stealing 90 kg of cocaine. After credits for time served and bail, he has about 9.5 years left—a roughly 6-year reduction from the Crown’s 16-year ask.

The judge explicitly cited an “Impact of Race and Cultural Assessment” (IRCA) detailing Abdelgadir’s experiences with anti-Black racism (including while traveling with his UN diplomat father), systemic barriers, and how they “somewhat” mitigated his moral responsibility, even while acknowledging it didn’t excuse the crime.

This is just another documented case sparking outrage amongst Canadians over sentencing practices in Canada.
