MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE BANK CONTROVERSY: $206 MILLION TAXPAYER LOAN SPOTLIGHTS POLITICAL CONNECTIONS IN NOVA SCOTIA WIND FARM PROJECT

OTTAWA — A heated exchange in Parliament has thrust the Canada Infrastructure Bank back into the spotlight after Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis grilled officials over a $206 million loan provided to the Mersey River Wind Farm in Nova Scotia in what critics are calling another example of widespread Liberal corruption.

The project, backed by public funds at what critics call favourable terms, is operated by companies whose board includes individuals with notable ties to the Liberal Party — including the brother of former cabinet minister Scott Brison, former Nova Scotia Liberal interim leader Michel Samson (recently linked to an ethics matter involving another minister), and others described as connected to former Liberal politicians.

During the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities hearing, Lewis pressed bank representatives on whether they were aware of these connections prior to approving the deal. Officials acknowledged some awareness of the relationships but declined to disclose specific interest rates or full loan terms, citing confidentiality. The CEO reportedly confirmed under questioning that board members had ties to former Liberal figures.

The arrangement has raised questions about transparency, potential conflicts of interest, and the use of taxpayer dollars in green energy initiatives — especially as many Canadians continue to face high living costs, energy prices, and tax burdens.

Critics argue the Canada Infrastructure Bank, intended as an arm’s-length investor in public infrastructure, appears too closely intertwined with political networks.

This latest development adds to ongoing public skepticism toward federal spending programs and infrastructure funding decisions. Opposition voices are calling for greater disclosure and independent review, while the government has not yet issued a detailed response to the specific allegations raised in committee.

Canadians are watching closely for more answers on accountability in how public funds are allocated.
